DJ l'onyx has always been a passionate of music and dance. She was formally introduced to music at the age of 6 when she started taking piano lesson and learning about music theory. She also took jazz, ballet and hip hop classes throughout her childhood. At the age of 18, a friend introduced her to Latin dances and she has been social dancing ever since. In 2013, she discovered kizomba and immediately fell in love with the music. Her passion for kizomba got her to learn the dance, the music as well as the culture. She is heavily involved in the Toronto Kizomba scene, organizing ongoing nights such as Descontra Wednesdays and Aura as well as festivals in Toronto, including So Kizomba Festival 2017 and Toque Toronto Kizomba Festival since 2018. Her experienced repertoire also includes assisting local and international instructors, notably one of the best female instructor worldwide Lucia Nogueira.

 

As a DJ, in the span of a couple of years, she made her mark in the Toronto kizomba scene by DJing at the major kizomba events in Toronto, including Mas Thursdays, Flavour Fridays, Kizomba com Kizomba, Bazik Fridays, Afrolatino monthly social and her own event, Descontra Wednesdays. She is the first female international DJ from Canada having played at small events and large congresses in Canada and the US in cities including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Rochester, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, New Jersey and most notably at Toque Festival Toronto and Sawa Sawa Kizomba Festival in Washington DC.
